Elizabeth "Betty" Madara

July 6, 1935 — September 22, 2021

Perryville

DELAWARE - Elizabeth Marie Madara (nee Varano) passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2021 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware. A lifelong resident of Kulpmont, PA until relocating to Perryville, Maryland to reside with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, she was the fifth of six children born to Joseph and Phyllis Varano, who emigrated from Isca Sullo Ionio, Calabria, Italy.

“Betty” received her sacraments at the former Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish and attended “good old St. Mary’s” school. She would fondly reminisce on the memories she had of the Sisters of St. Joseph in her nostalgic recalling of “the good old days.”

She was a 1954 graduate of Kulpmont High School and after graduation, worked in a garment factory for many years. On June 9, 1955, she married the late William Madara, who preceded her in death on January 5, 2006.

Betty was a fan of watching and talking about old movies and television shows, including Little House on the Prairie, Andy Griffith, Everybody Loves Raymond, and All in the Family. Before she relocated to Maryland, she enjoyed going to Kulpmont’s Senior Center to talk, play cards and be among friends. She loved tending to her garden in earlier years and jarring what she called her “bumper crop.” She also loved to crochet and amassed a large collection of yarn over the years.

Betty is survived by her daughter Cheryl and her husband Mathias Andrulewicz, Sr. of Perryville, MD; her granddaughter Elizabeth and her husband, James Silva and their children, Dominic, Gianna, and Azelie from Newtown, CT; and two grandsons, Mathias Andrulewicz, Jr. and his wife Rachel, Melbourne, FL and Nicholas Andrulewicz, Towson, MD. She was preceded in death by four sisters – Nancy Deitrich, Concetta Ostroski, Theresa Varano, and Elinor Marie who died in infancy – and one brother, Albert Varano.

Betty spoke often of the people she missed “at home,” and always held onto the expectation of returning to her beloved town. A member of Holy Angels Church, she will return home where a funeral mass will be celebrated on November 23, 2021.
